Welcome to the Local Plan Discussion Forum. This is where you can have a chat with others about the Local Plan topics, sharing what is important to you and your ideas for the future.

Each week we will suggest a different discussion topic, including housing, greener transport, community services and the natural environment, giving you the opportunity to express your thoughts and have a conversation with other people.

Your conversations will help to inform the development of the Local Plan.

Don’t forget to also give us your comments and thoughts by taking part in our surveys. We have a few questions on each topic, and you can choose just to answer the ones you are interested in.

The Local Plan sets out our vision for the future of the borough. That’s why it is important we work together to develop it and get it right.

Having access to nature is essential for our health and wellbeing, alongside the importance of supporting biodiversity in the borough to contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Comments so far have both focused on protecting and enhancing existing areas, such as the Hogsmill Nature Reserve, but also ideas for additional green spaces, "wild" (uncut) verges and grass areas to support flowers, bees, butterflies etc, to more plants and flowers in and around town centres and local neighbourhoods.

What else do you think could be done to promote greater access to nature?

  • How we plan for good growth

The new Local Plan will look to provide a mix of growth options, with a larger portion of that growth focussed in our most sustainable and accessible locations, such as town centres and near railway stations. This would need to be balanced through the development of small sites elsewhere in the borough.

Four potential areas have been identified that could support new development to provide leisure, cultural and night-time activity, commercial and retail uses, as well as higher-density housing:

    • Kingston town centre
    • Norbiton, London Road and Cambridge Road Estate
    • New Malden
    • Tolworth

Where in the Borough do you think higher-density housing would be appropriate and should be considered?

When new spaces and developments are designed well they can have social, economic and environmental benefits.

Feedback we have received has highlighted how proud people are to live or work in the borough - particularly its historic assets, heritage, arts and culture, with suggestions about how we can enhance them.

What particular cultural venues or heritage sites would you like to see protected in the borough? Are there any places that could be enhanced through new development?

Having access to community and sports facilities, play areas, schools and medical centres are important for our quality of life, health and wellbeing.

What services and facilities do you think your neighbourhood will need and where over the next 20 years?

What is it like to travel around Kingston now?

Do you think it is important that more people are encouraged and able to get around Kingston sustainably such as by walking, cycling and using public transport?

What can we do to help more people use greener transport in the future?
