South Western Railway (SWR) operates a ‘station adoption’ programme which gives communities an opportunity to get involved with their local stations and work together to improve them.

Groups adopting stations elsewhere have worked with SWR to:

  • add planters and art displays
  • introduce a book swap scheme
  • help keep stations litter free
  • create community space

SWR currently offers a range of benefits to adoption groups including:

  • guidance and input on ideas
  • a safety briefing relevant to the station
  • payment of membership fee for the Community Rail Network enabling access to increased project funding, training opportunities, useful resources and being part of the national community rail movement
  • 20 day return travel passes per adoption group each year
  • support to promote your activities and recognise your efforts, especially for the Community Rail awards (run by the Community Rail Network)
  • an opportunity to meet and network with other adoption groups at their annual Community Rail Conference.

Having local people involved in their station creates more pride in the building, reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the travelling experience for everyone.

We are looking to connect like-minded residents who may be interested in forming a group to ‘adopt’ Surbiton Station through this programme. Together, you will own and manage this adoption group.

Anyone who is interested in getting more involved in the station should leave their contact details in the form below. Everyone is welcome. This could be:

  • regular commuters who use the station and want to help improve their daily experience
  • those interested in the history the station and/or its architecture
  • local residents who would like to help improve the station environment.

We will use the contact details supplied to arrange an initial online meeting and invite everyone who expresses interest in taking part.

We hope to update everyone who has expressed interest by mid-April 2021, so a group could be formed in late Spring.

If you require any of these documents or the survey in a more accessible format, please contact james.geach@kingston.gov.uk or call 020 8547 5000.
