Community Parks Programme
As part of our ongoing work to improve and enhance our green spaces, we're investing £1.3million in our borough's parks. So far, through our Community Parks Programme We have delivered a range of improvement works including footpath resurfacing, playground makeovers and the installation of outdoor gyms in eight green spaces across the borough.
We are delighted that we will now be transforming three more playgrounds: Blagdon Road Open Space, England Way Playground in New Malden and Donald Wood Playground in Tolworth.
We will also be upgrading a new outdoor gym in Alexandra Recreation Ground, Surbiton.
Our parks have been of vital importance throughout the pandemic, providing access to green space for fresh air, contemplation and exercise, benefiting both physical and mental health.
How to get involved
We would like to get your views for these current projects we have planned for this coming year.
To note, once a contractor has been awarded we'll be able to show a draft design for each of the projects based on the initial feedback, you, the Kingston Community provide for us!
Please take a look through the draft descriptions for each site along with some photo examples of equipment we have provided in previous projects.

Drop-in sessions
Once the contract has been awarded for these projects, Kingston Council will carry out face to face drop-in sessions in close proximity to each of the site locations; which will give you the opportunity to meet the project manager and contractor of the project.

Blagdon Road Open Space has an existing playground that caters for ages up to 8 years and we are keen to increase the space and equipment on offer for all the users of the current playground. Below are some of the considerations that we have proposed as part of the development for the playground and two other key areas of the site which are the playing pitch and the grass embankment, opposite the playground. When submitting your thoughts/ideas, please consider:

- Do you visit other sites with play equipment in Kingston?
- How long do you stay when you visit?
- What do you like about the existing play area?
- What types of play equipment would you like included as part of the new proposal?
- Are there any items you would like to be removed from the existing playground?
Proposed plans:
The proposed plans for the playground will ensure that children of all abilities can learn, interact, imagine and play together
A new multi play unit that includes slides, tunnels and attachments to support climbing and imaginative play

More seating provided within the play area
Improvements to MUGA Pitch:
- Developing the court amenities so it can be used for both football and basketball
- Improve the social seating area
New Feature for Embankment:
There is a large grass bank opposite the MUGA pitch and we would like to get your feedback on what play feature options you would like to have considered in this area. The feature would be to further the offering for the older users of the site (11 years +) this would include a double zip wire or potential large featured climbing net that will challenge this age group.

Keep it simple - more natural play equipment like the current obstacle course in the middle. Also more trees & drinking fountain
Please can we return the big round swing back to its original form with the rope base (rather than big plastic tray) as it makes it easier for children to grip? A drinking station would be great as my kids are always asking for water and more trees for shade from sun & rain. Love the mound as it is as children use their imagination on there & teenagers sit and eat and hang around. Plenty of opportunities for rolling down in summer & sledding in the snow. If you can imbed a slide down the mound, that’s the only thing I would enhance. More park benches please, especially around the basketball court for teenagers. Finally, agree with the other suggestions that it’s not necessarily to add a zip wire as there’s already one at Beverley Park.

A stepping stone path parallel to the main path through the park.
Kids love jumping between the boulders that are next to the path near the basketball court. I think it would be nice to have spaced stepping stones in the grass roughly parallel to the path. That way parents can walk along the path and children jump along. The stones could be set into the ground so that normal mowing of the grass could happen. The stepping stones could also make a fun path up and the down the grass bank. Depending on budget the stones could also be coated with non-slip coatings, be different colours or different shapes. Fitting in with the bee theme from the posters at Jubilee Square and the Beeline next to the station there could be a path of hexagonal yellow stones (honeycomb) next to the path along the bottom of the grass bank with some bee shaped stones spaced for larger jumps further up the hill.

Keep it green
Keeping the trim trail (obstacle) course and as much greenery as possible. A few extra play equipment would be nice / is needed but I believe it’s important to keep as much of the grass and trees as possible.

Get a signature facility and be complementary to Beverly Park Playground
Dickerage Lane Adventure Playground has a tall slide while Beverly Park Playground has a zip wire. Could we get something unique and complement to other playgrounds? Kids would be motivated to walk to the next playground for a different fun. Court amenities for both football and basketball are great ideas. My kids always do football on the basketball when the grass are wet. Apart from the current standard height basketball hook, it would be great to get a junior hook. It encourages smaller kid to start basketball earlier. Could we improve the obstacle course as well? Elephant Park in Elephant and Castle has a very natural obstacle course in the city. It keeps the playground natural and green, but also great fun for kids.

Some ideas for revitalising the basketball court
- Ensure the court's lines are freshly painted with clear markings to enhance the playing - Use sturdy chain nets that are more durable and can withstand outdoor weather conditions, reducing the need for frequent replacements. - Install small bleachers or seating areas around the court to provide spectators and players with a comfortable place to rest and enjoy the games. - Address any surface cracks or uneven areas on the court to create a smooth and safe playing surface. - Collaborate with local artists and the community to incorporate vibrant artwork and murals around the court, making it an attractive and inspiring space for everyone. - Set up a bulletin board or electronic display to share court schedules, upcoming events, and community announcements. - Organize basketball tournaments, workshops, and coaching sessions to encourage more people to use the improved court and foster a sense of community.
