Murray House is a Kingston Council owned and operated residential care home located in the north of the borough. It has space to accommodate up to 38 people, but it currently only provides care to six permanent residents, with eight beds that are used for short-term stays.
Back in 2011, Kingston Council took a decision to stop placing permanent residents into all Kingston Council owned and operated care homes. This was based on a new model of care that enabled people to live independently and in their own home for as long as possible.
We have identified that in the future there will be an increasing need for specialist residential and nursing care to support people with dementia. To meet this need, the council has agreed to build a new dementia care home in Surbiton.
We know that it won't be cost effective to refurbish and update Murray House to meet Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards. For example, the square footage per room is not adequate and there are no en suite facilities. Also, Murray House cannot be converted to provide specialist dementia care. These factors are why we are consulting on possible closure.
Should a decision be taken to close Murray House, we will work with existing residents and their families in order to find them alternative accommodation in a new care home.
