Proposed dementia nursing home in Kingston

The Royal Borough of Kingston is proposing to build an 80 bed dementia nursing home in Brown's Road, Surbiton KT5 8SP, on the site of the old Newent House Care Home.
The borough has an increasing number of older residents who need bed-based care towards the end of their lives. Demand is particularly high for services for older people with dementia - there are estimated to be around 1,500 residents in Kingston living with dementia and it is predicted that this number will rise to over 2,100 people by 2027.
The home will provide high-quality dementia nursing care for older residents of the borough and make a vital contribution to meeting the rising demand for health and care services in Kingston.
When will things happen?
Fencing will be erected around the entire site early in the new year, the old home demolished, the site cleared and a new three storey building will be erected in its place. The timetable for this work is:
January 2020 | Fencing erected around the site and preliminary works |
January - March 2020 | Demolition and site clearance |
March 2020 - July 2021 | Construction |
Summer 2021 | Equipping the home and training staff |
Autumn 2021 | First residents enter the home |
How will this affect me?
The council's construction contractor, Integrated Health Projects (IHP) will work to minimise the impact of works on local residents, but inevitably, in a project of this scale there will be increased traffic and noise in and around the area during demolition and construction for which we apologise in advance. The planned working hours on the site are 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.
Parking on the Newent Site
The site will be cleared of all vehicles prior to fencing being erected. Any vehicles currently parked on site will need to be removed before work commences. Notices will be posted on-site nearer the commencement of work.
Limited suspension of some on-street bays to allow larger traffic to enter the site
In order to avoid damage to parked vehicles and to allow safe access by some larger vehicles e.g. the arrival of demolition and piling equipment, some of the on-road parking bays on the south side of Brown's Road between Ewell Road and the site, and on the boundary of the site and Warwick Grove will need to be suspended on specific days between 7.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday.
Any suspension of parking is subject to an application to, and agreement by the council's Highways department. Once we have further information, it will be posted locally and on this page.
How can I find out more?
We will regularly update this page and once work begins in January there will be a Site Manager on the premises during working hours. If you have any questions in the meantime, please email: dementiahome@kingstonconversation.co.uk
Working with the local community
Our vision is to make this home a great place to work and live. A home rooted in the local community, with services inside and outside the home that help people with dementia to live safely and with dignity. We will explore community engagement in:
- the use of art and music in the home, gardening, reading and visiting, history and inter-generational projects
- making it easy for people and organisations to work with us
- offering services beyond our walls
If you're interested in working with us in the future; as a member of staff, as a volunteer, on a community project, or as a local supplier of services please get in touch: dementiahome@kingstonconversation.co.uk
If you have any questions or comments about the project, please ask them below and we will get back to you.
